About Scott Cinemas
This cinema is situated within a Waitrose development that was constructed during the late 1960s, occupying the site where the original Orpheus Cinema once stood. The Orpheus Cinema was a charming suburban theater from the 1930s, boasting approximately 1,500 seats. Pictures depicting its nostalgic ambiance adorn the main entrance stairs, serving as a reminder of its bygone era.
Initially operated by Star Cinemas, a renowned national company known for their innovative creation of small, multi-screen cinemas, the venue underwent a series of ownership changes over the years. Each successive owner, including Cannon, MGM, ABC, and Mr. Peter Walker, contributed their own touch to the cinema’s legacy. Eventually, the lease was assigned to Reeltime Cinemas, who operated the theater until February 2009 when it was acquired by Scott Cinemas.
In May 2009, a refurbishment initiative was undertaken to enhance the retail and other areas while preserving the distinctive features that had made the cinema popular since its late 1960s design. These unique features, characterized by vibrant purples, illuminated stair banisters, and psychedelic screen lighting, continue to captivate audiences even after four decades.
In 2012, a significant renovation project was undertaken, introducing modern amenities to the cinema. Upgrades included the implementation of digital sound and projection systems, the installation of air conditioning for improved comfort, the enhancement of acoustics to elevate the audio experience, and the addition of soundproofing measures. These renovations further rejuvenated the cinema, ensuring it remains relevant and appealing to contemporary audiences.
Situated in an affluent neighborhood, this cinema has fostered a devoted and loyal audience over the years. The local community, including numerous students in the vicinity, enthusiastically supports this cherished cinematic gem. Its enduring success is a testament to the exceptional experience it offers, making it a highly regarded establishment within the city.
In summary, this neighborhood cinema, nestled within a prestigious area, holds a special place in the hearts of its loyal patrons. Through various ownership changes and refurbishments, it has maintained its unique charm and continues to shine. With its recent modernization efforts, including state-of-the-art technology and improved amenities, it remains a cherished destination for moviegoers seeking an exceptional cinematic experience.
